Walnut and copper matrimonial bed frame
Creative inspiration
This bed was designed and built to celebrate the union of a lovely couple. With full creative license, I really set my imagination free on this one. It was inspiring, and quite an honor to create something that would be so central to a new family.
hybrid japanese design
It’s fun to see how different design concepts can flow together. This is my attempt to blend traditional Japanese joinery into more contemporary design. The castle joints that join the sides and legs are not only beautiful and dynamic, but they allow for a bed that can be taken apart easily without any hardware. In fact, there is no hardware in this piece at all, other than the copper inlay of course.
Walnut with copper inlay
Walnut and copper pair so perfectly. They are two of my favorite materials and I have dreamed for years of inlaying metal into woodwork. There’s something royal about the combination, but it remains earthy at the same time: Noble without the arrogance. Adding metal to furniture design really brings it to a new level for me. Honestly, now that I see how much it can enhance a piece, I probably won’t be able to refrain in the future.
Texture and balance
Using modern tools and machinery can be a dream, and really makes precision and creative design easier, but sometimes it can create a look that feels a little too clean or factory-made. While I loved the clean lines and smooth finish of this overall design, I knew it needed a design element that would give it texture– something that showed it really was made by my hands. I used a chisel gouge to add that texture, accenting the copper shadow lines. Not only does this balance the aesthetic and add character, but it gives a lovely tactile quality to the piece when you run your fingers along it. After all, furniture is meant to be lived in and felt, not just seen. Homage to Nick Pedulla at Pedulla Studio for the inspiration.
Stoolmate
The Stoolmate is your luxury version of a squatty potty, made from beautiful hardwoods and designed to add elegance and ease to your bathroom experience. They are handcrafted using traditional wood joinery techniques so there is no hardware, and they are finished with an all natural hard wax. These solid wood Stoolmates feel luxurious and stable under your feet.
Benefits of Squatting
The Stoolmate is a specially designed stool intended to enhance the process of elimination by optimizing body positioning on the toilet. It consists of a durable, sturdy platform that elevates the feet while sitting on the toilet, allowing the user to assume a more natural squatting posture.
The Stoolmate features a compact, ergonomic, stable design that fits neatly around the base of most standard toilets. The primary function of the Stoolmate is to elevate the user's feet to a height that mimics the natural squatting position. This positioning helps to align the organs and body, allowing for smoother bowel movements.
Improved Colon Health
Squatting on the Stoolmate aligns the colon in a way that promotes easier elimination. This can help prevent issues like constipation, hemorrhoids, and straining during bowel movements.
Faster and More Efficient Evacuation
The squatting position encouraged by the Stoolmate encourages a more complete evacuation of the bowels by relaxing the puborectalis muscle, which otherwise creates a kink in the colon. This can lead to quicker and more thorough elimination, reducing the risk of fecal retention.
Reduced Strain and Discomfort
By facilitating a more natural posture, the Stoolmate can alleviate strain and discomfort associated with traditional sitting positions. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals with pelvic floor issues, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or other gastrointestinal conditions.
Prevention of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Squatting with the aid of the Stoolmate can help prevent pelvic floor dysfunction by minimizing the need for excessive straining during bowel movements. This may reduce the risk of pelvic organ prolapse and other related complications.
Enhanced Digestive Health
Regular use of the Stoolmate may contribute to overall digestive health by promoting more efficient bowel movements and reducing the likelihood of chronic constipation or fecal impaction.
